I vividly remember my mom driving me to school on the first day of the 7th grade. “I love the first day of school, mom,” I told her. “It feels so good to have a fresh start.” My mom put her hand on mine and said, “Honey, every day can be a fresh start.” Even as a 12 year old, I was struck by the power of those simple words.
Decades later, I still find this message powerful. It’s a message I try to instill in my patients. While we are inspired to make changes during certain time periods, often at beginnings, we must remember that each day holds the potential for making the changes we want to see in all areas of life. If we hold on to the belief that change is limited to particular times of year, we greatly limit the potential of achieving success on the rest of the days of the year.
I think this message is particularly important on the day after New Years. Maybe a compulsion you thought you would leave behind in 2018 was done on New Year’s Day. Today, January 2nd, can also New Year’s day as can tomorrow. Let this be the year you let go of self-limiting beliefs. A year of reaching our goals by letting go of past failures and starting fresh each day. These days will add up to a life you love waking up to.
